Morgan Arnold The Jacket (April 11, 2011)

[Had completed six essays so utilized this as a chance to blog]
The Jacket portrays an incredible story of atonement, as explained by Graves as a Spiritual Journey. Jack Starks traumatic life brought him to an insane asylum, where he faced the jacket. When in the jacket Jack experiencing life in the future. Graves explains this as liminality- a space in time when you are neither in the past nor the future, thus the figure has a moment where anything and everything is possible. This is the state that Jack enters when in the jacket. Graves explains further, “Liminal, or threshold states can produce a very great potential for change in an individual’s interior world and his/her response to exterior events or persons” (Graves, pp. 5-23). Originally, his plan was to use this time to figure out what happened to him and try to fix it, but through the journey, it becomes clear that that is not his purpose. His plan alters from being self-seeking to self-sacrificing. He risks much to help the keep he cares about and eventually gives the ultimate sacrifice. His redemption brings life and love to others. This can be compared to that of Jesus Christ. Jack becomes this symbolic figure of what it looks atonement looks like.
