This movie is one that has appealed to people of all ages. Even children find this movie amusing but may not know the underlying themes that we have discussed in class. The specific clip that we saw deals with an idea of reunification. The clip shows the protagonist depressed, crawling into an oven that seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel. After the imagery in the room, the oven is opened and one can assume that crawling into the oven is going to lead toward death. Maybe life is depressing for the character and death, or moving toward the light would be less depressing. The clues that are in the room show that she had lived a long life, the picture left a trim on the wall around the edges showing that it has been up there a long time.
Another conclusion that could be possible is that maybe this was all a dream. Maybe she died in her sleep, and once she woke up there was no cake, and moth was alive in over where she followed it toward the light. The symbol of the oven is a very powerful tool. When we think about an over, in is a tool the transforms different foods into different forms. Fire and heat is able to change from one state to another. When she wakes up the oven is shaking, showing the power that might be behind this symbol. Approaching the oven she is scared, wondering what might happen to he if she opens it, fearful. The final part of the clip is shown once the oven is opened. There is a bright light, that all of the moths are flying toward. This proposes the idea that maybe they are not moths, they could be symbolic of angel type figures that are leading her toward heaven, showing that it was her time to go and they were going to lead the way.
It is amazing how we are able to take one scene and show so much behind it. The religious resemblance behind this scene symbolizes that there are different ways to die and maybe when it is your time to go, God will show you a sign that will lead the way toward his world.
