Morgan Arnold The Book of Eli (April 2, 2011)
The Book of Eli is ruthless, challenging, inspiring, and surprising. The story is of a man living in a destructed world. We see him face adversity after adversity and always succeeding, because of his one goal: to keep a book safe. As the film goes on, we find that this sacred book is the last Bible in the world and his mission is to get to Alcatrez Island (the one safe place left). At the conclusion of the film, we learn that Eli overcame all of these trials as a blind man and the sacred Bible that every one was after was in brail. However, it is not the book that was sacred- for Eli has learned the Bible from beginning to end. Thus, he could preserve the Word. The film is based on the Biblical passage, “live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). It is a huge testament to the possibilities of walking in God’s love, no matter what the day brings. This story is inspirational beyond words and I encourage all to watch it.
