Morgan Arnold K-Pax (April 18, 2011)

K-Pax plays with this incredible idea of reality versus fantasy. The main character, Prot, exemplifies this concept of myth. C.S. Lewis explains that myths help humans in understanding reality/life. Throughout the film, we question the legitimacy of Prot’s claim to be an alien. The movie is beautiful, because there are moments when you completely trust that indeed he is an alien, thus falling into the reality of the myth. However, we also see the danger (or beauty) in creating fantasy to cover up our greatest, deepest, and darkest stories. When I actually found the truth about Prot, I questioned again whether he was really an alien or a traumatized man. I do like to indulge in fantasy and viewed to take it as Prot (from K-pax) used Robert Porter’s body to come to Earth and when he went back to his planet, he left Robert in the care of his friend, the doctor. He also takes Bess back with him, so that he may return to Earth. However, this is fantasy. Thus, the beauty in this is that it makes us thing; it makes us learn a lesson in friendship and Truth.
