The movie K-Pax to me is excellent. I enjoy first and foremost because the audience can determine for themselves what exactly Kevin Spacey’s character is. Could Prot be an alien? Is he an angel? I thought about this question a lot when watching it because the questions were brought up to me when I originally watched the film. Prot is very smart and there are times in the film that he vanishes. He definitely at times freaks out and he definitely has a troubled past. This being said if humans can have troubled pasts then why can’t aliens or even angels?
I thought about it more and what aspects could prove he was an alien. There is the fact that he knows a great deal about the solar system and it is proven in the film when he traces a force field. This is the driving factor that could prove that he is an alien. Another factor is that he is intelligent and he seems to be able to speak different languages. The language he speaks is K-Paxian, English and dog. He loves fruit but that could just be preference. I was leaning to idea that Prot was an alien until I saw how he cared for everyone he came into contact with.
Angels look out for mankind up above. The entire time Rot is in the hostital he is trying to save or cure everyone he comes into contact with. While being there Prot was able to touch many lives and help people think more about themselves including the staff. I believe this is what angels do and why I personally lean towards this idea. When his friend Robert was in trouble Prot said he just knew and came to the rescue. Now I had heard that angels can possess a human being and if so then it is possible that Prot possessed Robert and lead him to a safe environment, the hospital. It was in a way of apologizing for showing up to late and not being able to save Robert and his family.
The notions or ideas that Prot is an angel or an alien are fun to examine and try to analyze because it makes the film seem more of mystery or myth. Of course Prot the entire time could have been just a nut job. Believing this is no fun because it takes away the message of the movie. The message to me was that believing in one another and yourself is an amazing tool and it can help.
