Anne Taylor Robertson Blog 9: The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner is a great book by Khaled Hosseini. I am not finished with it yet. It’s story is irresistible and compelling. It is the story of a few boys growing up in wealthy Afghanistan before the rise of the Taliban. It is a very convicting read because it shows readers a part of the world that we sometimes don’t know much about, and it highlights part of a beautiful peoples’ history which we have forgotten. When I think about Afghanistan, I think of war, death, terrorism, violence and terrible poverty. Unfortunately, this is not the story of Afghanistan. It once was a beautiful place with safety and life. The story recounts how the country fell into the hands of the Taliban and the mass exodus to Pakistan. I am looking forward to continuing to read this one, even though it’s been out for a while. It challenges our views of the Middle East and what we think about them, as well as our perception of Muslims. While I don’t believe the same things Muslims do, I think it is good and important to understand, respect and love people of all cultures and backgrounds. This book contains a heart-wrenching story of a young boy born before the generation that grew up knowing only bombs and danger.
