So if anyone just scrolls down they will see that the four movies that I chose to write on for my topics of choice were all love stories. Okay, so I admit it, I am a sucker for love. I love to hear about couples who have made it through the thick and thin. I am riveted by whatever it is that makes people fight for love. My own parents have been married for 34 years today and are celebrating their anniversary over dinner as I write. There is nothing more than the fascination of trying to understand the ins and outs of what we call love. The movie Babbett’s Feast was really interesting to me because I know that there are more than one type of love but I think that I have been learning that an erotic must stem from the human attempt at showing agape.
In saying that, I know I am far from understanding the concept of love, but it continues to fascinate me. One thing that makes human love so beautiful is that it stems from the love that God has for humans. It is not one that expects perfection, instead He just seeks our love in return and is willing to sacrifice what is important to him (Jesus) in order to have us with Him for eternity. So, the love we see in movies is not real you may say. Well of course the movies make it look a little better than the messiness of real life, but the reason love stories are such a big hit, is because I think, every person desires to be loved by someone. And in the movies, it happens and they can be used as a way of escape from the disappointments of real life.
The religion in this post is that love is what transforms the world. I know I may be laughed at for being all sappy, but if someone is hurt by another person and hurts them in return, nothing changes. That is human nature. But when someone is hurt and turns the other cheek and is willing to love those who have hurt them, just as Jesus forgave those who killed him, people begin to notice something different. When I watch a love story unfold I always look for the flaws in the character because I want the movie to be believable, but there is something reassuring in the fact that the One who showed us how to love first does not have any flaws. That is the defining space in time, when one makes the crucial decision to take a step of faith and hope that the other person reciprocates the most beautiful emotion in the world: love. Thus, just as life can be seen as a journey with profane time, love is what makes life sacred. The love I am talking about does not come from the passionate relationship between a couple, but is rooted in an understanding that living life is to be a willful act of sacrifice in an expression of love for another.
