I loved stumbling across this articles years ago and feel that is appropriate to bring it back now. There are multiple things that I love about this article: a)it discusses Harry Potter, b) it discusses Rowland’s use of Biblical themes throughout the series, c) MTV is the one posting it. There are so many wonderful ironies in this article. I am an avid fan of Harry Potter and have read all the books on multiple occasions. The seventh and final book is nearest to my hear, specifically because we see the symbolism between Harry and Jesus- both sacrificing their lives for the freedom of the ones they love and both rising from the dead. This article reveals Rowling’s goal to express this from the start, but her plan to not make it overtly Christian, so that people were not turned away. I think this is beautiful and genius. Through this story, we learn what true love, friendship, trust, and sacrifice looks like. Along the way, she drops not only Biblical concepts, but actual versus. For example, she uses 1 Corinthians 15:26 on Harry’s parent’s grave verbatim. If you look into the entire passage, we see the beautiful imagery that is present in both Harry and Jesus:
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
Rowling’s usage of faith and sacrifice is a tangible example of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. Soon we will see the conclusion and sacrifice on the big screen. Too good to be true.
