Jackie Lentz: Blog #2 (Student Topic) Sucker Punch
This will probably ruin the movie Sucker Punch so if you haven’t seen it you shouldn’t read this entry just yet. I am going to spoil part of the movie so I wanted to give you a heads up. The main character, Baby Doll, goes through a terrible tragedy. Not only does she have to deal with the death of her mother but she accidentally, which probably to her doesn’t matter, killed her own little sister while trying to protect her from her evil stepfather. She killed the last person on earth that she loved, and it drove her insane. I don’t doubt that she was crazy when they brought her to that hospital but because the stepfather profited from it I will not accept that she might have needed to be there. She discovers that she can escape the real world and transform into an incredible fantasy in order to find a way to escape the hospital forever. Almost immediately the audience is tipped off that perhaps she will not survive to escape but the twist at the end makes up for the predictability of the other parts of the film. In the end Baby Doll sacrifices her freedom for the freedom of the only girl in the story who didn’t really deserve to be in that hospital. They all seem like they need it, if not to be treated like animals as they were, the characters all seemed to need some kind of help, except for this particular girl who goes on to survive and escape. I initially thought of Baby Doll as a Christ figure, with her angelic features and boldness against the evils of the hospital but then I remember the beginning and think that she is not a Christ figure but a character that must repent by saving an innocent girl. The message at the end stays with you too; they encourage people to fight. Not fight like in fight club, but fight against oppression and the everyday evils that persist today. The purpose of her fantastical imagination was to find a better outlet to save herself with but the outcome was still the same, find escape for at least one of them. The survival of one girl would be worth the lives and risks of all the girls that came before. I relate this to my faith, in that I must fight to remain strong and connected with God and in the end the sacrifices, the tragedy will be worth the final prize of Heaven.
