My roommate got the three Twilight movies for Christmas and even though I have been known to laugh at the movies for their terrible acting, the choppy lines, and the plot line, I am drawn to watch them for some embarrassing reason. Although they would never fall under my favorite movies or even under having a few good quotes other than just to make fun, I do see a common theme that fascinates us and fits in with the class: life and death. Bella is drawn to the idea of being able to live with Edward for all of eternity, but Edward has been 17 for several hundred years and realizes that the natural course for existence is to live and to die and not cheat death.
The interesting thing is that the vampires can die- they must be torn apart and then burned in a fire. As we have learned in this class, fire is a symbol of eternal. The vampires are also shiny, almost like their skin has sequins in it, when they are in the sunlight. This shining in the true light of day makes me think of how their true identity is revealed in light, just as all deception is revealed according to the saying “shed light on it,” and the vampires are forced to go into hiding. Living forever goes against our bodily design and the reason for being placed on this earth. Edward constantly acknowledges that he does not wish his non-aging body and nearly eternal life as a vampire on Bella or any other human because it is not natural or as fun as it sounds.
This fascination with life and making the most of it makes me wonder what it is that is so alluring to keep in this world. Although I love being alive, we were only meant to be here temporarily because this is not the end destination. I enjoy having relationships but there is so much pain and heartache in life, as well as physical limitations. The part that must be so attractive to Bella is that if she became a vampire, other than her desire for human blood, she would look the same, young and healthy teenager for the rest of time and she would be with the man she loved as well. What is it about love that makes a person drop everything and pursue it with such a desire for physical and emotional connection with another person? This film just causes me to wonder how many other people would choose an eternal life on earth with the love of their life instead of wanting more than what we are able to experience here.
